on the blues

The sound of the blues, particularly the Chicago variety of the genre, is so ubiquitous in our culture that its almost unimaginable that any reasonably rounded man can’t identify it on hearing. If you ask your average chap to describe the sound of the blues, he’ll most likely given you an approximation of B.B. King’s late 60’s sound (and maybe play a little air guitar at the same time).

But the blues is a broad and meandering river, running south north (protagonists in blues songs tend to be travelling south-north, in country music they tend to travel east-west) and the balanced man should have a rounded appreciation of breadth of that river, as well as the bayous and oxbows that dot the way.  So here is a list of 12 bluesmen (and woman) that every man should know about…
